AI Isn’t Replacing Our Industry—It’s Accelerating It

Every time a new technology comes along, someone predicts the end of an industry. We have seen it happen over and over again. When automation arrived, people claimed manufacturing would disappear. When computers became commonplace, many believed they would replace engineers and eliminate countless jobs. Then came robotics, cloud computing, and digital transformation, each accompanied by warnings that people would soon become obsolete.

Now it is artificial intelligence’s turn.

Every day there seems to be another headline predicting that AI will replace workers, eliminate entire professions, and fundamentally reshape the economy. While some of those predictions may contain a grain of truth, they completely miss what is happening in the electronics industry.

From where I sit, AI is not replacing our industry. It is accelerating it.

Without advanced electronics, there is no artificial intelligence.

Every large language model, every intelligent robot, every autonomous vehicle, every medical diagnostic platform, every industrial automation system, and every AI-powered data center depends on sophisticated electronic hardware. Behind every breakthrough in artificial intelligence is an extraordinary amount of engineering, semiconductor technology, advanced packaging, printed circuit boards, interconnect solutions, thermal management, and precision manufacturing.

Software may receive the headlines, but hardware makes it all work.

That should give everyone in our industry tremendous confidence about the future.

Think about the enormous computing power required to train today’s AI models. The processors are becoming faster. Memory requirements continue to increase. Data centers consume unprecedented amounts of electricity. Cooling systems are becoming more sophisticated. Signal integrity challenges become more demanding with every new generation of hardware.

None of those challenges reduce the need for electronics manufacturers.

They increase it.

Every improvement in artificial intelligence creates another opportunity for companies capable of producing advanced printed circuit boards, complex substrates, sophisticated electronic assemblies, and highly reliable packaging technologies.

The better AI becomes, the more advanced the hardware behind it must become.

That creates opportunity.

Of course, AI is changing more than just the products we manufacture. It is also changing the way we work.

The smartest companies are already discovering that artificial intelligence is becoming one of the most valuable productivity tools they have ever adopted.

Engineers are using AI to accelerate research, evaluate design alternatives, identify potential reliability concerns, and shorten development cycles. Instead of spending hours searching technical references, they can begin with intelligent recommendations that help them reach better decisions more quickly.

Sales professionals are using AI to prepare customer presentations, analyze markets, identify emerging opportunities, and personalize communications. Rather than replacing the relationship-building skills that great salespeople possess, AI gives them more time to focus on customers because routine work is completed faster.

Notice something important.

That is not a replacement.

Throughout my career I have watched companies react to change in two very different ways. One group spends its time explaining why the new technology will never work. They wait. They hesitate. They hope things return to the way they used to be.

The other group gets curious.

They ask better questions.

How can this help our customers?

How can this improve quality?

How can this shorten lead times?

How can this make our employees more successful?

How can this help us innovate faster?

Those companies usually become tomorrow’s market leaders.

History has a funny way of repeating itself. The organizations that embrace meaningful change almost always outperform those that resist it.

Artificial intelligence is unlikely to be any different.

There is another benefit that deserves more attention.

AI is helping companies share knowledge more effectively than ever before.

For years, many organizations struggled to capture the experience of their best engineers before retirement. Valuable knowledge often existed only inside someone’s head. Like every powerful tool, its value depends entirely on the person using it.

That is why leadership still matters. Culture still matters. Engineering expertise still matters. Manufacturing excellence still matters. Customer relationships still matter.

AI does not replace those fundamentals.
